The
Departments of Chemistry and
Physics sponsor a program
leading to a Certificate in Materials Science.
Students pursuing a Ph.D.
or M.S. degree in either department can receive
a Certificate in Materials Science at the same
time they complete their advanced degree. To receive the certificate, students
must do the following:
- Complete the Ph.D. or M.S. degree
requirements in Physics or Chemistry
- Satisfactorily complete
at least two graduate courses in Materials Science.
Examples of courses that fulfill the Materials
Science course work requirement include:
- Solid State Chemistry (CHEM 6377)
- Physical Inorganic Chemistry
II (CHEM 6375)
- Surface Chemistry (CHEM 7325)
- Instrumental Characterization
of Materials (CHEM 6332)
- Solid State Physics I (PHYS 7337)
- Solid State Physics II (PHYS
7338)
- Diffraction Methods in Materials
Science (PHYS 7341)
- High Temperature Superconductivity I or II (PHYS 7347 or PHYS 7348)
- Ion Beam Modification of Materials (PHYS 7345)
- Materials Characterization Using
Ion Beams (PHYS 7346)
Currently enrolled students and
new students are encouraged to apply. The application form is available online as a pdf document.
