NLO-Active Metal Oxides
The synthesis and characterization of crystallographically non-centrosymmetric (NCS) materials is being investigated. We attempt to synthesize new NCS materials by combining cations susceptible to second-order Jahn-Teller (SOJT) distortions. Once synthesized, we optically characterize these materials through powder second-harmonic generating (SHG) measurements. These measurements allow us to not only determine the magnitude of the SHG efficiency, but also to ascertain the structural origin of the response.

New Oxyhalides
We synthesize new oxyhalides through a variety of techniques including transport and reflux synthesis. Recently, we synthesized an anionically templated material, by using NbCl5 as a transport agent. In our material Cl- templates a three-dimensional cationic oxide framework. We have also synthesized a variety of layered PbII materials that undergo ion-exchange at room temperature.
